MINT Mobility and Integration Europe 2020

The ongoing demographic changes in many countries of the European Union will increase the requirement for recruiting well trained specialists from foreign countries. Actually a greater number of good-trained younger people in some crisis countries in the EU as Greece and Spain have left their home countries to work in other EU-member states. This migration as a benefit for others sometimes causes problems in the supply system in the regions the specialists emigrate from.

Above all smaller and medium sized municipalities in the European Union in the coming years have to develop and employ innovative strategies and instruments to be able to use the increasing mobility within and from outside the European Union for a sustainable local development.

The project MINT Mobility and Integration Europe 2020 establishes a network of smaller and medium sized municipalities in the European Union to identify good practices of  integration of immigrants and based on that will develop tools and instruments for practical work on migration by the administrations in the MINT network municipalities and others.

For people living in the MINT network municipalities the project will show opportunities and the benefit of migration. With its strategy "Europe 2020" the EU has launched a blueprint for the development of an intelligent, sustainable and integrative society. The implementation of the strategy requires innovative approaches and instruments on all management levels with regard to mobility and integration. The objectives "fight against poverty", "intelligent and sustainable economic development” as well as "development of new employment opportunities and skills” are closely linked with a systematic employment of the economical, social and cultural potentials of migration. The use of these potentials is a challenge for smaller and medium sized municipalities in the European Union, because they often do not dispose of specially trained staff members, adequate instruments and information on good practices employed in other cities and countries with similar tasks and problems.

In 2014 eight MINT municipalities with funding from the EU programme "Europe for Citizens" have formed a network to work on good and best practices on mobility and integration. Network members are the city of Eschweiler (D) as promoter and the cities of  Stolberg, Eupen (B), Kerkrade (NL), Wattrelos (FR), the Municipality of Pasman (HR), the Ortona Local Council (I) and Fundacion Maimona (ES) as its partners. In 8 workshops in Eschweiler in 2014 and 2015 representatives from administration and politics, private and public institutions and from organizations as well as citizens will cooperate and exchange knowledge and experiences for a better use of migration potentials and for a successful integration of immigrants by smaller and medium sized municipalities. All results of the network´s activities will be prepared and disseminated for use by other municipalities.

An information note on the 8 MINT Workshops in 2014 and 2015 can be found here.
